Young Clowns Welcome International Athletes

Roses, hugs and smiles for visiting athletes from around the world

As the teams were lining up to march in at the Opening Ceremonies, the athletes and coaches of the 1st FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships were surprised with a little local laughter.

The project started as a collaboration between neXt Company Theatre and SOFIFRAN, a Welland-based group who's mandate is to assist Francophone immigrants to successfully integrate into life in the Niagara Region. At a workshop with local actor Monica Dufault and neXt Co-Artistic Director David Fancy, a group of youngsters learned the art of clowning.

The night of the Opening Ceremonies, the young clowns were in fine form, surprising the athletes and coaches from 31 countries with beautiful roses, smiles, and hugs. Enjoy the video!

Thanks to these collaborators for their support!

  • Cabaret Sauvignon was a fabulous show – fast-moving, raunchy, biting but fun, poignant and with spectacle. Indeed a vindication of cabaret. Congratulations. Just shows you what you can get away with ingenuity and irony.
